Forecast for the DC area: Here we go again, with returning shower chances over the next few days

A somewhat subjective assessment of that day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

5/10: The Monday sun is on the run as our “Gray May” darkens the day, eventually bringing more gloomy showers and mushroom growing.

  • Today: Partly cloudy, increasing chance of showers. Highs: 67-73.
  • This evening: Scattered showers, thunder? Lows: 59-63.
  • Tomorrow: Partly cloudy, scattered showers. Highs: 64-71.

Yesterday’s pleasant weather is on the way out as clouds cover our skies, setting the stage for a few showers today and tomorrow, and possibly a few thunderstorms, especially later this afternoon or evening. More showers are possible tomorrow, followed by a modest outbreak Thursday through part of Friday. But another storm system should bring more rain at times late Friday and Saturday.

Today (Tuesday): There is a chance of light rain this morning. We have a greater chance of scattered showers this afternoon. Although the rain may be on the light side initially, a few showers with thunderstorms are possible in the late afternoon or evening. Mostly cloudy skies will offer highs into the upper 60s and low 70s. Winds will be from the south at speeds of 5 to 15 miles per hour, with some higher gusts. Confidence: medium to high

This evening: Cloudy with scattered showers. Heavy rain showers and thunder are possible. The wind is from the south, about 5 to 10 km/hour. Lows range from near 60 to the low 60s. Confidence: Medium to High

Tomorrow (Wednesday): It will remain mainly cloudy and there may be scattered showers, especially in the morning until the afternoon. Some models are drying us out a little faster, but we can’t shake the clouds either way as highs range from the mid 60s to near 70 degrees. The wind is lighter and comes from the northeast at speeds of 8 to 16 km per hour. Confidence: average

Tomorrow evening: Partly cloudy with scattered light showers possible, but most of the night should be dry as lows drop to cooler uppers around 60 degrees. Confidence: average

Thursday is between storm systems, and there is a chance for partly sunny skies, but unfortunately it looks like partly to mostly cloudy is the safer bet. Highs will be slightly warmer in the mid 70s, with only an isolated shower or storm possible. Thursday evening will look partly to mostly cloudy with lows in the upper 50s to low 60s. Confidence: average

Friday It should be cloudy with a chance of isolated showers until scattered showers and thunderstorms become more likely in the evening and overnight. Daytime highs should reach the 70s again, followed by Friday night lows in the low to mid 60s. Confidence: average

From this moment on the weekend looks like a messy start with a cloudy Saturday with showers, thunderstorms and high temperatures in the low to mid 70s. A few more showers are possible Saturday night with lows in the low 60s. Sunday could be a bit drier, with the evening perhaps becoming partly or mostly sunny with highs in the mid to upper 70s. But it is still too early to completely rule out a cloudy and cooler day with a persistent chance of showers. Confidence: low-medium
