DepEd orders are investigating the death of a student due to poor grades

The Department of Education (DepEd) has issued an official statement expressing its condolences to the family of a Grade 10 student in Maasin City, Iloilo Province, who committed suicide.

The student was reportedly devastated after receiving low grades in a subject titled “Edukasyong Pantahanan in Pangkabuhayan” (Homeschooling and Economic Education).

It was learned that the student’s grades in two marking periods were 64 and 69 respectively as he allegedly failed to complete the required projects.

“The Department of Education extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of a Grade 10 student of Maasin, Iloilo, who sadly passed away on May 10, 2024. The Child Protection Committee of the said school will carry out psychosocial interventions for those affected. peers and teachers close to the said student. The school involved will also consult with the competent authorities about this. In the meantime, as we await the official police report and findings, we urge the public to refrain from spreading unconfirmed stories as a mark of respect for the family in this time of grief,” the statement said.

The DepEd Central Office has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.
