Vic Schaefer returns with Texas

STARKVILLE — Coach Vic Schaefer will return to Humphrey Coliseum for the 2024-2025 season.

The SEC announced its home and road opponents for the upcoming women’s basketball season on Tuesday, and for Mississippi State it also includes hosting Texas.

MSU’s other home-only opponents include Alabama, Arkansas, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Texas A&M and Oklahoma. The Bulldogs will travel to face Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Missouri, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

Mississippi State’s enemy is Auburn. It is the first time since the 2019-20 season that MSU has faced Auburn twice in a regular season.

The release by the SEC came as the conference prepared to add Texas and Oklahoma. The Bulldogs and Sooners have met only twice before, with the last meeting coming in 2021. MSU and Texas have faced each other five times with the last game coming in 2018.

Schaefer is entering his fifth season at the helm with the Longhorns. He previously spent eight seasons (2012-2020) at Mississippi State, where he helped lead the Bulldogs to the national title game twice (2017, 2018).

Schaefer left MSU for Texas after the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the 2020 postseason. The Bulldogs were 27-6 overall and 13-3 in SEC play in his last campaign. Mississippi State was expected to be among the top seeds in the NCAA Tournament.

Sam Purcell, who is entering his third season at MSU, is the third head coach for the Bulldogs since Schaefer’s departure. He led Mississippi State to the NCAA Tournament in 2023 before falling short this year.
