City reopens Weyburn Art Gallery with ‘8 Rooms’ exhibition

The City of Weyburn will reopen the Weyburn Art Gallery and continue to display the “8 Rooms” art exhibit after the gallery closed due to a complaint.

WEYBURN – The City of Weyburn will reopen the Weyburn Art Gallery and continue to display the “8 Rooms” art exhibit after the gallery closed due to a complaint.

More parental warnings and signage will be posted outside the Weyburn Art Gallery.

Representatives of the Weyburn Arts Council spoke to the council behind closed doors, following the public portion of the council meeting on Monday evening, to question why the gallery was closed and to call for the exhibition to be reopened.

“While I was initially disappointed with the way this situation was handled, I am pleased that the City of Weyburn did not move to ban the ‘8 Rooms’ exhibit. It is reassuring that Weyburn will continue to be known for its thriving arts community and not for its censorship,” said Tasha Hill, president of the Weyburn Arts Council, of the city’s announcement to reopen the exhibition.

The suitability of exhibitions for younger viewers in the gallery is at the discretion of the parents.

“The city is committed to showcasing artistic expressions and advancing the community’s understanding and appreciation of the arts,” said a statement from the city Tuesday morning.

The following messages appear when an art exhibition may not be suitable for all audiences.

The first warning reads: “Discretion advised: While we believe in the importance of artistic expression, we understand that some content may not be suitable for all audiences. We encourage visitors to exercise discretion and self-awareness when exploring the gallery.”

The second warning reads: “Guideline for parents/guardians: Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult when visiting the Weyburn Art Gallery. Parents or guardians accompanying minors are advised to consider the suitability of the gallery’s adult themes and content for their children.”

The ‘8 Rooms’ art exhibition will remain at the Weyburn Art Gallery until the exhibition ends on June 26.

The City of Weyburn is committed to continued improvements in procedures and policies to ensure our facilities remain inclusive and accessible to all community members.
