On the plus side: Baby Reindeer star Jessica Gunning predicted she would be the frontrunner for Emmy

“I don’t think you can do that when you play a role like that. I’ve always seen her as multifaceted and complicated… I feel like Martha is the role of a lifetime. I felt really moved by her.”

However, Gunning’s portrayal has attracted some very vocal detractors.

Following the show’s success, fans quickly searched online to find out who Martha is based on. Although Gadd and Gunning have urged fans not to pursue Martha’s true identity, a woman named Fiona Harvey — allegedly the stalker who inspired Martha — has vilified Baby Reindeer and “the fat actress” who played her.

In an interview with English television personality Piers Morgan, which has been viewed more than 10 million times on YouTube since its release on May 10, Ms Harvey accused Gadd and Netflix of lying and defaming, and exploiting her misery.

She also denied stalking Gadd and insisted she was never jailed, and has threatened to sue Netflix.

Although controversy surrounding the series is still rife, Gunning’s well-received performance is not in question.

Hollywood trade magazine Variety recently predicted that Baby Reindeer will likely be on the list of nominees for the 2024 Emmy Awards, which will announce nominees in July and present the awards in September.

Gunning in particular has been tipped by Variety to win the Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series category.
