Met Eireann pinpoints thunderstorms as ‘heavy’ rain to lash Ireland before positive turn for weekend

MET Eireann has identified when thunderstorms will hit parts of the country ahead of the positive turn at the weekend.

Weather bosses have confirmed that ‘heavy’ rain will continue to fall for the rest of the week, accompanied by cloud and thunderstorms.

Despite the wet weather, temperatures remain high

Eireann’s Andrew Doran-Sherlock advised “heavier thunderstorms” today and tomorrow.

He said: “This morning will see a lot of dry weather with sunny spells, but scattered showers will develop.

“It is most common in western areas, where it will become heavy at times with a chance of thunderstorms later in the afternoon and evening.”

Despite rain and thunder, temperatures remain ‘mild’.

Highest temperatures today range from 15ºC to 20ºC.

Tonight it will remain dry with “isolated” showers and some fog may develop, especially inland.

There will be more thunderstorms on Thursday with persistent heavy rain.

Andrew advised: “Another day of sunny spells and scattered showers, heavy at times with a further chance of thunderstorms.”

Temperatures remain mild with highs of 17ºC to 21ºC.

Patches of fog and mist will develop Thursday night.

Clouds will also develop, bringing more showers from the east.

It looks like the thunderstorms will remain isolated through today and tomorrow and dissipate before Friday and the weekend.


The weekend will take a slightly more positive turn as conditions become drier.

Met Eireann’s Andrew Doran Sherlock advised: “We will have some rain or showers on Friday before drier, but not completely dry, conditions arrive for the weekend.”

Friday will start cloudy and wet with rain and drizzle, followed by sunny spells in the afternoon.

Highest temperatures from 16C to 19C.

Saturday will be a lot drier than the rest of the week.

Andrew advised: “It will again start mainly cloudy with some patchy rain and drizzle, but clearing to mainly dry conditions will follow from the north.”

Sunday will also remain drier than the rest of the week, but that will be short-lived.

Met Eireann advised that Sunday would be “dry for many with a mix of cloud and sunny spells, although some showers will occur.”

It will rain again next week, with Met Eireann giving the first indications that more showers and longer periods of rain will follow.
